Surprisingly enough there are several project management software programmes on the market.  You may not have heard of them unless you are into that side of a business.  Some of the product options are GanttProject, OpenProj, TaskJuggler, SharpForge, and Artemis.  These software programmes will do several different things.

Artemis for example is project management software, collaborative software, issue tracking, project portfolio management, resource management, and document management.  Artemis, MicroPlanner, Planisware 5, and Primavera Project Planner are just a few of the software that offer all options.  Even Microsoft Project doesn’t have everything.  In fact MS Project has the project management and resource management.  All other options are unavailable to consumers with Microsoft.  

It is up to you to decide what is really important regarding the software programme.  Artemis and those like it will be more expensive, but they offer more options.  If you really need to run a business or school project all you need is the Microsoft Project.  The other options, while helpful, aren’t something that is needed because office does have the options in other programmes such as Access.  So you truly do get everything you need within the Office suite that contains Project.
